The Basics

My name is Shaula. I live in Seattle, Washington, USA. I completed a Sustainable MBA in 2008 and now do research & consulting. My research interests focus around local economy, community economic development, racial equity and socially responsible investing.

Over the years I have been a bookworm, a software engineer, an amateur triathlete, a philanthropist, and an angel investor. I am engaged in the study of entrepeneurship. I’ve enjoyed reading The Little Princess, Snow Crash, The Mythical Man-Month, The Divine Right of Capital, The Burning of Bridget Cleary, Wild Swans and Manhattan For Rent. I drink Tea: green, oolong, black, white, iced or hot. Not so keen on Rooibos or scented teas, excepting of course Captain Picard’s favorite. I subscribe to the Puget Sound Business Journal, The Wall Street Journal, and Stanford Social Innovation Review. I prefer to wear earth tones and sensible shoes. I know that no matter who I am, being born a middle-class white female locates me in a larger social structure. It’s easy to focus on the ceiling but I also acknowledge the floor.

I did my MBA at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute because I didn’t want to talk about markets and competition without coercion and inequality. When we talked about externalities, we talked about internalizing them. I read Raising The Bar (Erickson), Contours of Descent (Pollin) and From the Ground Up (Cole & Foster). I learned the difference between focusing on task versus relationship and how to be a systems thinker. As a computer geek I know all too well that once you post it to the internet, you’ve set it free - there’s no taking it back. As a BGIer I’m ready to move forward and live the undivided life. This is my blog.

As I get further into capital markets and away from high-tech, I’ve begun to encounter folks whose primary exposure to the concept of a blog seems to be reading about Matt Drudge and political dirt-digging in the Wall Street Journal. Fear not, that’s just the sensational side. Why do others have blogs? I wrote about that here.
