If you are having trouble with LCD artifacts try to reseat the flat cable from LCD electronics to motherboard. To disconnect the flat cable you must open the white plastic clamp as seen below. You can clean the contacts using a swab with alcohol. For Pilot 1000 and 5000 the display module is an Optrex DMF 50654NF. For better understanding on digitizer operation check this document.
